Slovakia sees Thailand as a gateway to Southeast Asia, while offering Thai businesses access to the European Union. Foreign Minister Juraj Blanár (SMER-SD) made the remarks after meeting his Thai counterpart, Sihasak Phuangketkeow, in Bangkok. It was the first visit by a Slovak foreign minister to Thailand in 21 years.
The talks focused on strengthening economic ties, with both sides identifying opportunities for cooperation in defence, information technology, cybersecurity, energy and water management, including nuclear power. Thailand also asked Slovakia to support its efforts to secure a free trade agreement with the EU and an exemption allowing Thai businesspeople to travel to the Schengen area without visas.
Blanár was also due to meet Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and deliver an invitation from Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico (SMER-SD) to visit Slovakia.
