Slovakia and Cyprus Seek Closer Cooperation

Slovakia and Cyprus want to further strengthen cooperation, both bilaterally and within the European Union. Slovak President Peter Pellegrini discussed closer ties with the Speaker of the Cypriot House of Representatives, Annita Demetriou, in Bratislava on Monday. The head of the Cypriot parliament last visited Slovakia in 2019.

Pellegrini reaffirmed Slovakia’s support for a comprehensive solution to the Cyprus issue based on UN resolutions and international law. Slovakia has supported dialogue between the island’s two communities for more than 37 years and has contributed to the UN peacekeeping mission UNFICYP. Slovak troops have served in the mission for 25 years.

The talks also covered economic cooperation, EU competitiveness and security, the bloc’s next long-term budget, Cyprus’s successful completion of its presidency of the Council of the EU, as well as the war in Ukraine and the situation in the Middle East. Demetriou also met Slovak Parliamentary Speaker Richard Raši (HLAS-SD), who voiced Slovakia’s support for Cyprus joining the Schengen area.
