Slovakia Gets a New Civil Code After More Than 60 Years

Lawmakers approved a new Civil Code on Thursday. The legislation, spearheaded by the Justice Ministry, is intended to replace the current code, which dates back to 1964 and was drafted to reflect the realities of socialist life.

According to its proponents, the old code created an unnecessarily restricted legal framework for making free decisions about one’s own affairs. The new code is designed to cover a broader range of private-law relationships and make the legal system more consistent and clear.

The legislation consists of seven parts and is due to enter into force on July 1, 2027.
