Government measures aimed at mitigating the impact of high fuel prices came into effect on Wednesday, including a 50 percent reduction in train fares. Fares for intercity buses and urban public transport are also set to be reduced from October 12. However, mayors of regional cities point out that the changes will make little difference to regular public transport passengers. The opposition, meanwhile, argues that convenience, rather than price, is the main factor influencing whether people choose to travel by car or public transport.
