Slovak President Peter Pellegrini agreed to Prime Minister Robert Fico’s (SMER-SD) request to withdraw the proposal to dismiss Environment Minister Tomáš Taraba (SNS nominee). The President’s office confirmed that it received Fico’s letter and accepted his request. The Prime Minister withdrew the dismissal proposal on Monday, saying the move was aimed at maintaining government stability and preserving its parliamentary majority.
The dispute centres on tensions between Taraba and the coalition SNS party, which had called for his removal. SNS has urged Taraba to resign by September 30, and says it may seek his dismissal in parliament if he refuses. Fico has warned that if SNS leader Andrej Danko and Taraba fail to resolve their dispute, he is prepared to call early parliamentary elections in January 2027. The opposition PS party also plans to seek an immediate parliamentary debate on Taraba’s dismissal.
