Slovakia recorded a record number of people receiving treatment for drug addiction in 2025, according to the Institute of Drug Addictions at the Bratislava Centre for the Treatment of Drug Dependencies. Nearly 3,400 people received treatment last year, an increase of 12.4 percent compared with 2024. This was the highest number of patients treated for drug addiction in Slovakia on record.
Methamphetamine remains the most commonly used drug and the most frequent reason for psychiatric treatment related to substance use. Stimulant addiction accounts for the largest share of cases, followed by addiction to opiates, primarily heroin and other opioids.
Cannabis addiction is the third most common reason for psychiatric treatment.
According to the institute, the structure of the drug market and the main reasons people seek treatment have remained relatively stable over the long term.
