The number of cars on Slovak roads has doubled over the past two decades, reaching 3.8 million, according to the Slovak Statistical Office. Around 105,000 vehicles are added each year. At the same time, greener forms of transport are gaining ground. Slovak factories produced more than 111,800 electric cars last year, accounting for five percent of all electric vehicles sold from EU countries.
Public transport is also seeing stronger demand. In 2025, Slovaks made 502 million journeys by city public transport — almost a third more than in 2019. Rail travel reached 74 million journeys last year, although that remains nine percent below pre-pandemic levels. Cycling infrastructure is expanding too, with cycle paths in Slovakia’s regional capitals reaching 624 kilometres in 2025, up two-thirds in six years.
The figures come as European Mobility Week ends on Tuesday with Car-Free Day, promoting walking, cycling and public transport.
