Igor Maukš is expected to become Slovakia's new ambassador to Poland, with current Ambassador Andrea Elschekova Matisova saying farewell to the diplomatic corps in Warsaw and her Polish colleagues at a reception on Wednesday (16 September) marking Constitution Day and Slovak Armed Forces Day.
Maukš served as Slovakia's ambassador to Israel from 2019 to 2024. Before that, he worked as coordinator at the foreign minister's office and as political coordinator of the Permanent Mission of the Slovak Republic to the United Nations (UN) in New York. Maukš stated before the House committee for European affairs that he wants to strengthen cross-border cooperation with Poland and improve support for the Slovak minority there.
His predecessor Andrea Elschekova Matisova has been serving in Warsaw since 2022. In the past, she held the posts of Slovakia's Ambassador to Switzerland and Liechtenstein and of Head of the European Commission (EC) Representation in Slovakia.
In her address at the ceremonial reception, she praised the good relations between both countries and highlighted their importance in the context of the current security situation. "In Slovakia, in Poland, and throughout Central Europe we realise that a good neighbour is much more than just another colour on a map. It's a shared experience. It's a shared responsibility," she stated.
