Slovak MPs opened their first parliamentary session after the summer break on Tuesday, with almost 300 items on the agenda. These included a new Civil Code, restrictions on social media for children under 16, changes to voting from abroad and several constitutional amendments.
On Wednesday, President Peter Pellegrini delivered his State of the Republic address. He described deep political polarisation as one of Slovakia’s most serious problems and criticised what he described as the opposition’s tendency to reject initiatives without discussion.
Pellegrini also highlighted the Slovakia 2040 vision, prepared with experts from the Slovak Academy of Sciences. He called for broader political cooperation on long-term priorities, including innovation, energy, education and the transition towards a higher-value economy.
Parliament also scheduled two extraordinary sessions on opposition motions to dismiss Economy Minister Denisa Saková and Interior Minister Matúš Šutaj Eštok.
