Prime Minister Says Slovakia Cannot Escape Rising Fuel Prices

Prime Minister Says Slovakia Cannot Escape Rising Fuel Prices

Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD) says it is in the government's interest to keep fuel prices in the lower half of the EU's cheapest countries.

He said fuel prices are discussed at every cabinet meeting and will be on the agenda again on 16 September. Fico acknowledged the seriousness of the issue, which he is also discussing with Slovnaft, but pointed to the wider European context and the Iranian-American conflict affecting commodity prices. He again criticised the European Commission over energy prices, saying the issue was also discussed at Thursday's V4 meeting with the Irish prime minister in Bratislava. Fico warned that gas prices continue to worsen, but said Slovakia is prepared and has the tools to prevent household gas and electricity prices from rising in 2027.
