Housing Construction Slows Rapidly

Housing construction in Slovakia has slowed significantly. According to the Statistical Office, the number of new homes where construction began in the second quarter fell by 40 percent year-on-year, while the number of completed homes dropped by more than a third. It was the lowest number of homes completed between April and June since 2000. Real estate analysts warn that limited new supply is contributing to rising property prices. Developers point to lengthy permitting procedures, high interest rates and geopolitical uncertainty as key obstacles. The Transport Ministry says amendments to construction and spatial planning legislation currently before parliament aim to address problems with the new building rules.
