Slovak 15-year-olds have scored above the OECD average in mathematics in the latest PISA assessment, but remain below average in reading and science. The findings were presented in Bratislava on Tuesday, marking the first-ever regional presentation of PISA results for countries in Central and Eastern Europe and Central Asia.
Education Minister Tomáš Drucker (HLAS-SD) described the results as a reason for cautious optimism, while acknowledging there is still room for improvement. Science scores have risen significantly compared with the previous two PISA cycles, although they remain below the level recorded in 2006.
The results also highlight a significant gap between pupils. Around three quarters of students in non-graduation vocational programmes fall into the low-performing group in reading and mathematics. Socioeconomic background also has a stronger impact on pupils’ performance in Slovakia than across the OECD. Slovakia took part in PISA for the eighth time in 2025, with 300 schools and 6,684 15-year-olds participating.
