The West should step up efforts to communicate with Russia, together with Ukraine. Slovak President Peter Pellegrini made the comments on Slovak Radio’s Sobotné dialógy programme on Saturday. He said the war Russia is waging against Ukraine can only be resolved through diplomacy. At the same time, however, Pellegrini warned that the war is beginning to spill beyond Ukraine’s borders. He said some attacks could be organised directly from Russian territory.
The president reiterated his view that Slovakia, including the state and companies producing military equipment and ammunition, must take appropriate measures. Pellegrini also said that, despite its shortcomings, the European Union remains Slovakia’s “living space”. He does not expect any EU member state to be preparing to leave the bloc.
Turning to domestic politics, the president said next year’s parliamentary election could result in a political stalemate. He does not believe the parties currently represented across the political spectrum will be able to form a governing coalition. Pellegrini said it could be beneficial for Slovakia to have a broad coalition bringing together the current opposition party Progressive Slovakia and the governing Smer-SD-led coalition.
