Slovakia needs to bolster its food self-sufficiency while systematically preparing for the consequences of drought, which poses an increasingly serious threat to domestic agriculture, President Peter Pellegrini declared on Wednesday at the ceremonial opening of the 51st Agrokomplex 2026 international agricultural and food exhibition in Nitra.
According to the president, the importance of domestic production increases particularly during periods of crisis and uncertainty. Although food shortages can now be offset by imports from other countries or continents, the state is stronger when it is not dependent on outside assistance in key areas, Pellegrini underlined. "Food self-sufficiency is now just as important as energy or defence self-sufficiency. Major global trials, such as the recent pandemic, clearly showed that in times of crisis, individual states must rely primarily on themselves," he accentuated in his speech.
Domestic production is also closely linked to food quality and public health. "Quality local food is often the best remedy for today's lifestyle diseases. Every state should do its utmost to ensure that such healthy and affordable local food forms the basis of the products available on shop shelves," Pellegrini said.
The president identified prolonged drought as one of the most serious challenges facing Slovak agriculture. In his view, it is no longer a short-term fluctuation but a phenomenon for which Slovakia must prepare systematically. "It is essential to prepare for the fight against drought and heat. Not only tactically, but also strategically. This means not only addressing the current damage to our fields, but also preparing fundamental measures that will deliver long-term results," he claimed.
Pellegrini welcomed the fact that the government is aware of the risks associated with drought and has declared its readiness to act. He considers the swift adoption of effective measures crucial. "The goal must be to protect Slovak farmers from the consequences of drought," he stressed.
As for climate challenges, the president also highlighted the need to protect and make efficient use of Slovakia's water resources. "In today's world, successful states distinguish themselves by what makes them unique and what their competitors do not have. Therefore, I repeat my idea that we should seek ways to make the best possible use of this gift that Slovakia has been endowed with," he said. Drinking, mineral and river waters have enormous potential, according to the president, and the country should use it for the benefit of its people.
