It is the government's duty to revisit the idea of the Tichy Potok waterworks project [Prešov region], Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD) told a briefing in Nitra after the government's session on Wednesday.
"Just as this government had the courage to say that we would restart the primary aluminium production in Ziar nad Hronom (Banska Bystrica region), and as we had the courage to decide to build a new nuclear unit at Jaslovske Bohunice [Trnava region], or for other serious decisions, I want the work of the national commission [on water and drought - ed. note] to result in a decision that another huge water reservoir will be built in eastern Slovakia," said Fico.
"All the documentation is ready. We have to have the courage to look for solutions. We cannot constantly just look at what some green activist says. That simply isn't possible. Nor can it happen that some hockey player has a cottage somewhere and brings the construction process of a project to a halt. That just won't work," he added.
"We only have Starina [water reservoir] there. We must act. That's why I believe we need to revisit this huge project," stressed Fico.
He added that he would submit the water reservoir project to the new water and drought commission as one of the first items on its agenda.
"We'll reassess the state of preparations and what financing options might be available. If a final decision is made, we'll certainly inform you. But at least today I am announcing that I'll propose that we get back to this project and begin discussing and preparing it again step by step, if it proves feasible," added the prime minister.
