The SHIFT Innovation Center of Siemens Healthineers was officially opened in Bratislava at the end of August. It will focus on artificial intelligence in clinical applications, cybersecurity for healthcare technologies, and quantum technologies. The center will not merely be a place where technologies are developed, but also a hub for creating medical innovations and know-how with a global reach.
The SHIFT Innovation Center in Bratislava is the seventh innovation center in the company’s global network. It will focus on artificial intelligence in clinical applications, supporting healthcare professionals in evaluating examinations, automating routine aspects of measurements, and making precision diagnostics more efficient. Other key areas of the center will include cybersecurity for healthcare technologies, which is becoming increasingly important as the number of connected devices and threats targeting hospitals continues to grow. In the future, the center will also focus on quantum technologies, exploring their potential for medical imaging and the processing of complex biomedical data.
“Innovation centers are not branches that receive an assignment from headquarters and then send back the finished result. They are centers of expertise that bring their own perspectives and capabilities to our company’s global network. Each of the six existing centers focuses on the areas in which it is strongest. Our Slovak center also has a clearly defined role – to bring new and creative ideas to this network and develop areas in which we have a strong foundation and a real ability to improve patient care worldwide through medical imaging technologies such as MRI, CT, X-ray and ultrasound equipment,” explained Vladimír Šolík, Managing Director of Siemens Healthineers Slovakia.
For this reason, according to the company, the investment in the center cannot be viewed simply as an investment in new premises or technical equipment. A crucial part of the investment is the people and their qualifications, as well as the specialized know-how required to develop healthcare technologies – from software certification and validation of AI models to security architecture.
The center will also include R&D laboratories and testing facilities where new solutions can be developed, validated, and tested for functionality and safety in accordance with the regulations applicable to healthcare technologies. The ecosystem will also include continued cooperation with universities and startups.
