Slovakia hosted a meeting of the Visegrad Four foreign ministers with Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi on Tuesday. The talks in Tomášov will be the first ministerial event under Slovakia’s current presidency of the V4. Slovak Foreign Minister Juraj Blanár (Smer-SD) said the meeting aims to renew regular political dialogue between the V4 and Japan after a five-year break. Discussions focused on political and economic relations, security and foreign policy, as well as the future of EU-Japan cooperation.
During a separate meeting with the Japanese Foreign Minister, Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD) expressed an ambition to raise Slovak-Japanese relations to the level of a strategic partnership. He described Japan as one of Slovakia’s most important and reliable partners in Asia.
Fico highlighted investment and industrial modernisation, including Nippon Steel’s acquisition of U. S. Steel Košice. Motegi’s visit is the first by a Japanese foreign minister to Slovakia in 19 years.
