Slovakia is marking Constitution Day, commemorating the adoption of the country’s constitution on September 1, 1992. The Constitutional Court described it as the fundamental legal document defining Slovakia’s democratic values, principles and the protection of individual rights and freedoms.
President Peter Pellegrini said the constitution has proved to be a high-quality and lasting document whose fundamental framework has remained relevant for more than three decades. He rejected calls to rewrite it completely, while acknowledging that amendments may sometimes be necessary.
Pellegrini stressed that constitutional changes should not be made for short-term political purposes and called for broader political consensus, including agreement with at least part of the opposition. September 1 remains a national holiday in Slovakia, although it is no longer a day off work.
