Major changes to Slovakia’s traffic rules take effect on September 1, affecting drivers, pedestrians and electric scooter users. Penalties for serious and repeated offences will also increase. Drivers exceeding the speed limit in built-up areas by more than 50 kilometres per hour could face fines of up to 1,300 euros. Three serious offences within 12 months will require additional training and a rehabilitation programme, while a fourth will result in the loss of a driving licence.
Electric scooters faster than 25 kilometres per hour will be banned, while slower ones will generally have to use roads. Pedestrians will also be prohibited from using mobile phones while crossing pedestrian crossings.
