Last year 732 people applied for asylum in Slovakia, almost a third more than in the previous year according to statistics from the Interior Ministry. Only 32 people, however, were granted asylum. Most of the applicants came from Afghanistan.
Somalia, Georgia, Pakistan, Syria, Iran, and Vietnam were also on the list. Slovakia received the largest number of applications, 11,395 when it joined the European Union in 2004.
