More than 20 Slovak diplomats have visited the Holocaust Museum in Sereď as part of their professional preparation for Slovakia’s planned membership of the UN Security Council in 2028 and 2029. The programme focused on human rights, the prevention of antisemitism and the protection of democratic values.
The museum stands on the site of a former labour and concentration camp from the Second World War. The diplomats toured its permanent exhibition and discussed antisemitism, xenophobia and other forms of discrimination with museum director Martin Korčok.
Foreign Minister Juraj Blanár (Smer-SD) said knowledge of national history is an essential part of a diplomat’s preparation. He stressed that understanding where hatred, discrimination and war can lead is particularly important for diplomats who will represent Slovakia in international organisations.
