A Slovak team continues to take part in joint international efforts to combat the extensive wildfires in Serbia, the Fire and Rescue Corps (HaZZ) posted on social media, adding that the latest information indicates that an area of 4,000 hectares is currently on fire.
According to HaZZ, the firefighting operation is being complicated by sandy terrain, which is practically inaccessible for heavy equipment, a lack of water sources and strong, shifting winds.
"Given the nature of the terrain, the fire is unpredictable. Due to the ground conditions, vegetation and wind, it tends to flare up again at full intensity after one or two days. The fire has been burning since 4 August. Some 450 people are responding at the scene on the Serbian side, including 200 professional firefighters," said HaZZ.
International teams from Germany and Romania are also involved in the operation. The Serbians haven't requested any further ground help so far.
The Slovak aerial firefighting module successfully arrived in Serbia on Saturday (22 August) and immediately joined efforts to combat a large forest fire in the Deliblatska Pescara nature reserve (Deliblato Sands) east of Belgrade.
