The financial transaction tax is likely to be abolished from the beginning of next year, Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD) said on social media on Monday.
At a meeting on preparations for the 2027 state budget, Fico instructed Finance Minister Ladislav Kamenický (Smer-SD) and Finance Ministry Deputy Minister Radovan Majerský to prepare all necessary legislative and technical measures to abolish the tax from January 1, 2027.
The financial transaction tax was introduced by the current government in April 2025 as part of its consolidation measures. Businesses and opposition representatives have long criticised the levy, while junior coalition parties SNS and Hlas-SD have also expressed reservations about it.
