The government will provide assistance to towns and villages affected by severe weather, Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD) said at a press conference on Saturday. He added that he was monitoring the situation together with the relevant authorities.
“We’ll once again step in to help these towns and villages if they approach the government, and we’ll provide some form of compensation,” Fico said.
The prime minister also said he considered climate change to be increasingly evident.
“It seems that this is now our future, one to which we’ll have to get used to and which we’ll have to fight against,” he said.
The prime minister also announced that, ahead of the opening of the Agrokomplex exhibition, which is due to take place between 2-6 September, they intend to convene a thematic cabinet session in Nitra in the morning. Fico added that he had asked Agriculture Minister Richard Takac (Smer-SD), and Environment Minister Tomas Taraba (a Slovak National Party/SNS nominee) to work with other ministries to put forward all possible proposals concerning measures to combat climate change in Slovakia.
