Slovakia will seek a seat on the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency at its General Conference in Vienna in September. The Slovak delegation will be led by Foreign Minister Juraj Blanár (Smer-SD). Blanár highlighted Slovakia’s strong reliance on nuclear energy and said membership would allow the country to play a greater role in decisions concerning nuclear safety and energy security. Slovakia also plans to promote innovative nuclear technologies, including small modular reactors, and strengthen the peaceful use of nuclear energy. If elected, Nuclear Regulatory Authority chair Marta Žiaková is expected to represent Slovakia on the IAEA Board of Governors.
