Foreign Minister Juraj Blanár (Smer-SD) held an online meeting with Russian Science and Higher Education Minister Valery Falkov to prepare for the renewal of a Slovak-Russian intergovernmental commission on economic, scientific and technological cooperation. The commission is expected to meet this autumn, following an agreement reached by Prime Minister Robert Fico and Russian President Vladimir Putin in 2025.
Opposition parties criticised the talks, pointing out that they took place on the same day as Russian strikes on Ukraine that killed at least 13 people and injured dozens more. Progressive Slovakia, SaS and the Christian Democrats questioned closer cooperation with Russia amid the continuing war and security concerns.
