Slovakia’s Folklore Community Mourns Darina Laščiaková

Slovakia’s Folklore Union has declared Tuesday, August 18th, a day of mourning for the country’s folklore community in memory of renowned folk singer, ethnographer and radio editor Darina Laščiaková. The union was calling on the public to observe a minute of silence, particularly between 12:30 and 1:30 p.m., during her funeral ceremony in Bratislava.

Laščiaková died on August 12th at the age of 94. She began her career as a soloist with the Lúčnica folk ensemble and later worked for Czechoslovak Radio in Bratislava, producing numerous programmes about traditional Slovak music. She also made recordings for radio, television and records and performed at home and abroad. Laščiaková received the title of Merited Artist in 1975 and several international awards for her folklore recordings.
