Fire Breaks Out in Veľká Fatra National Park

A fire broke out in the central part of Veľká Fatra National Park on Monday morning. The national park administration has called on visitors to avoid the area between Smrekovica and Skalná Alpa. Firefighters, rangers, and employees of the National Park Administration are currently responding to the forest fire at the site.

Over the past weekend, Slovakia experienced several forest fires across the country. The areas around the Súľovské skaly near Bytča, Popradské pleso in the High Tatras National Park, as well as Veľká Fatra National Park, are located in hard-to-reach terrain, making firefighting much more difficult.

According to experts, longer periods of drought and heat create conditions that allow wildfires to spread much more rapidly. This does not mean Slovakia will face the kind of forest fires seen in Southern Europe, but the risk will be higher during dry spells. Prevention and rapid response remain crucial.
