Slovakia’s prosecution service is to review the Interior Ministry’s purchase of controversial traffic radar cameras. Prosecutor General Maroš Žilinka has instructed the Bratislava Regional Prosecutor to examine all circumstances surrounding the procurement that could be relevant from a criminal law perspective.
The Interior Ministry says it respects the procedure and will fully cooperate. The review follows concerns raised by opposition party PS over the possible Russian origin of the cameras and the security risks they could pose. The Ministry and supplier Soitron have denied claims that the devices are Russian-made. PS is also calling for an independent analysis by a foreign expert organisation from an EU or NATO country, in addition to checks by Slovakia’s National Security Authority. The Ministry has meanwhile asked the supplier to remove two radar units from test operation, saying their origin and key components have not been sufficiently documented.
