10 August marks the Day of Remembrance for Victims of Mining Accidents in Slovakia. On August 10, 2009, a fire broke out in an old corridor of the Handlová mine, followed by a coal-gas explosion that claimed the lives of 20 people. The scale of the tragedy prompted legislative changes the following year. In 2010, Parliament approved August 10 as the Day of Remembrance for Victims of Mining Accidents. Slovakia officially commemorated the day for the first time in 2011.
