People across Slovakia will have the chance to witness a rare combination of astronomical phenomena on Wednesday, August 12, as a partial solar eclipse will be followed by the peak of the Perseid meteor shower.
The eclipse is expected to begin shortly after 7:20 p.m. By sunset, more than 80 percent of the Sun’s disc will be obscured in western parts of Slovakia.
According to Ján Svoreň of the Astronomical Institute of the Slovak Academy of Sciences, conditions for observing the Perseids will be favorable after dark. The Moon is expected to set at approximately the same time as the Sun, leaving the night sky relatively dark and making the meteors easier to observe.
The combination of the partial eclipse and the peak of the Perseid meteor shower is expected to make Wednesday evening an especially spectacular event for skywatchers across Slovakia.
