Extremely low water levels on the Danube are causing restrictions on river transport in Slovakia and neighbouring countries. Passenger cruises have shortened routes, cargo shipping has been affected, and transport costs are rising as companies look for alternatives. The low water has also revealed historic shipwrecks, including a World War Two vessel near Medveďov. Authorities warn people not to touch suspicious objects, as they could contain unexploded military material. Experts say the river level will only improve after longer periods of rainfall in the Danube’s upper basin, especially in Germany and the Alps, which are not expected soon.
