Slovakia has honoured two Slovak soldiers who lost their lives while serving in the United Nations peacekeeping mission UNPROFOR in the former Yugoslavia.
The names of Master Sergeant Igor Rigo and Corporal Vladimír Grman were unveiled at the Pobjednik memorial in Croatia during commemorations marking Croatia's Victory and Homeland Thanksgiving Day and Veterans' Day.
Foreign Minister Juraj Blanár (Smer-SD) said peace should never be taken for granted and stressed that the sacrifice of Slovak peacekeepers remains part of Slovakia's modern history.
UNPROFOR, was active between 1993 and 1996, was Slovakia's first international peacekeeping mission after independence. Since then, more than 13,000 Slovak soldiers and police officers have served in 16 UN missions. Slovakia currently contributes personnel to missions in Cyprus and the Middle East.
