Slovakia will continue supplying Hungary with the agreed volume of water despite historically low levels of the Danube caused by prolonged drought.
Hungarian Foreign Minister Anita Orbán said Slovakia had pledged to maintain the internationally agreed flow of 400 cubic metres per second and, if rainfall reaches Slovakia first, to prioritise additional water for Hungary.
Slovak Environment Minister Tomáš Taraba (SNS nominee) confirmed Slovakia is meeting all international obligations while managing its own limited water resources. He rejected claims that Slovakia is withholding water to increase electricity production at the Gabčíkovo hydroelectric plant.
Low water levels have disrupted shipping in Hungary and forced the Paks nuclear power plant to reduce its output.
