Around 300,000 hectares of agricultural land in Slovakia are gradually becoming overgrown, according to the conservation organisation BROZ.
The group says restoring former meadows, orchards and pastures could help farmers adapt to climate change, increase domestic fodder production and create opportunities for young farmers.
Environmentalists also warn that overgrown land threatens biodiversity by replacing species-rich grasslands and reducing habitats for pollinators and rare birds. They are calling for greater financial support as part of the next EU funding period.
