Matica Slovenská Marks 163rd Anniversary

Tuesday marks the anniversary of the founding of Matica slovenská, one of Slovakia’s oldest cultural institutions. It was established on August 4th, 1863, in Martin, and is remembered each year on the Day of Matica slovenská. The organisation was the first nationwide Slovak association and the only officially permitted Slovak organisation in the former Kingdom of Hungary.

President Peter Pellegrini says Matica slovenská has been a pillar of the country’s national and cultural life for more than 160 years. He thanked everyone helping preserve Slovakia’s traditions, history and cultural heritage. Parliamentary Speaker Richard Raši (HLAS-SD) also paid tribute. He said the institution has played a vital role in protecting the Slovak language, culture and historical memory. Raši added that its legacy continues to strengthen national identity and highlights the importance of understanding Slovakia’s history and cultural roots.
