Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD) says Slovakia is ready to help Hungary if the country faces an energy crisis linked to the possible shutdown of the Paks I nuclear power plant.
Writing on social media, Fico warned that low water levels in the Danube could force the plant to suspend operations because the river provides cooling water for its reactors.
The Prime Minister said he had discussed the situation with Economy Minister Denisa Saková (Hlas-SD) and the head of Slovenské elektrárne, Branislav Strýček. He stressed that Slovakia's nuclear power plants at Mochovce and Jaslovské Bohunice use a different cooling system and continue operating as planned.
Electricity production at Hungary's Paks plant has already been reduced from its usual 2,000 megawatts to around 480 megawatts. Hungarian authorities are now assessing domestic generation capacity, electricity imports and possible measures to manage demand.
