Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD) says Slovakia's Constitution does not allow same-sex marriages performed abroad to be recognised or entered into the national registry.
According to Fico, the Constitution defines marriage exclusively as the union of a man and a woman, meaning such marriages cannot be registered in Slovakia. He said applicants will be informed accordingly.
His comments follow action by Prosecutor General Maroš Žilinka, who criticised the Interior Ministry for failing to decide on two applications concerning same-sex marriages concluded in Austria within the legal deadline.
The Interior Ministry maintains that current Slovak law provides no legal basis for registering same-sex marriages, citing both the Constitution and the Family Act.
