Slovak President Seeks Fairer Access to Chinese Market

Slovak President Peter Pellegrini met Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing on Tuesday, describing relations between the two countries as “above standard.” Pellegrini said China is Slovakia’s biggest trading partner outside the European Union, but noted that the trade balance remains heavily in China’s favour. He called for fairer access for Slovak and European companies to the Chinese market.

The two leaders also discussed closer cooperation in artificial intelligence, advanced technologies, research and education, with Pellegrini saying Slovakia welcomes further Chinese investment. They also agreed to strengthen ties between universities and research institutions.

On global security, both presidents said current armed conflicts cannot be resolved by military means and stressed that dialogue is the only path to lasting peace. Pellegrini also invited Chinese President to visit Slovakia, saying the trip could take place next year during the Chinese leader’s planned visit to Europe.
