Portugal has increased its military presence in Slovakia to 156 troops as part of NATO’s strengthened eastern flank. Portuguese Army Chief of Staff Eduardo Mendes Ferrão said the move reflects a worsening security situation and the return of conventional warfare to Europe.
Portugal has been part of NATO’s multinational battlegroup in Slovakia since 2022, established after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine to reinforce deterrence and collective defence. Ferrão said the increase from around 30 soldiers two years ago demonstrates Portugal’s commitment to the Alliance. The contingent, led by Spain, includes Leopard 2A6 tanks and armoured vehicles. Portugal also has troops deployed in Romania under NATO and in the Central African Republic as part of a UN mission.
