A team of Slovak firefighters departed on Friday to help battle major wildfires in southwestern France. They were deployed to the municipality of Saumos in the Gironde region, which is currently facing extreme heat and widespread forest fires. Their mission is to support French emergency services in protecting lives, property and the natural environment. The deployment comes as the wildfires have forced the evacuation of around 12,000 people, including thousands from campsites near the coastal resort of Cap Ferret. The fires have already destroyed roughly 2,000 hectares of land, while the Gironde department remains under its highest wildfire alert level.
