In its annual rule-of-law report, the European Commission acknowledged progress in some areas of Slovakia’s judiciary but expressed concern over shortcomings in the fight against corruption, the transparency of the legislative process, and the protection of journalists and public-service media. According to the report, the number of corruption investigations and prosecutions has fallen significantly, partly due to changes to the Criminal Code.
The Commission called on Slovakia to continue judicial reforms, strengthen anti-corruption measures and improve the legislative process. Prime Minister Robert Fico and other coalition representatives rejected the assessment, while the opposition argued that the government was failing to address serious problems in the country’s anti-corruption framework.
