Slovakia is marking the 34th anniversary of the Declaration of Sovereignty, a key milestone on the road to independence. The declaration was adopted by the Slovak Parliament on 17 July 1992, while Slovakia was still part of Czechoslovakia, amid negotiations on its future. It paved the way for the adoption of the Slovak Constitution later that year and for the creation of the independent Slovak Republic on 1 January 1993. President Peter Pellegrini described the declaration as a landmark document that marked a crucial step towards the establishment of an independent Slovak state. In a social media post, the President said it reminds people that freedom, sovereignty and independence should never be taken for granted, adding that its legacy should inspire efforts to build a confident and successful Slovakia based on mutual respect and unity.
