Research by Slovak neurosurgeons has helped shape new US clinical guidelines for the treatment of brain tumours, earning international recognition for a team from the University Hospital Bratislava. Their study on the use of intraoperative ultrasound during awake brain surgery became one of the key scientific sources used by the Congress of Neurological Surgeons in developing its updated recommendations. According to the Health Ministry, the technique allows surgeons to see tumours more accurately during surgery, helping remove more of the tumour while improving patients' prognosis.
