Tourism in Slovakia is breaking records. May was the strongest one in history in terms of visitor numbers to accommodation facilities and beat the previous record from 2019. Accommodation in Slovakia was almost 8% more than in the same period last year and over 4% more than during the previous record May 2019. Interest is growing among both domestic and foreign tourists. Foreign visitors, with 224,000 accommodated guests, increased by almost 13% year-on-year.
Statistics also indicate that this year could be the most successful in Slovak tourism history. Zuzana Eliášová, a spokesperson for the tourism portal Slovakia Travel, says that this is mainly due to the development of air connections. Bratislava has long attracted the highest share of foreign visitors. Trenčín is increasing its attractiveness thanks to its title of European Capital of Culture, and we are also recording stable interest in Slovak spas.
Marián Kočiš, an analyst at the Slovenská sporiteľňa bank, adds that equipment sales were also 20% higher year-on-year in May. According to him, good results have been visible since the beginning of the year, which may have an impact on the economy in the second quarter. However, according to the analyst, this may not have a significant impact on economic growth. "It will be rather moderate, because, for example, accommodation services have a smaller weight than retail, which continues to show that household consumption has remained rather subdued since the beginning of the year," Kočiš points out.
