Slovakia Launches UN Security Council Campaign

Slovakia has officially launched its campaign for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the 2028–2029 term. Speaking at the UN headquarters in New York, Foreign Minister Juraj Blanár (Smer-SD) said Slovakia aims to play a more active role in promoting among others peace and international law while intensifying diplomatic efforts ahead of the 2027 election.

During his visit at the UN headquarters, Blanár also addressed the UN High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development, where he called for faster implementation of the UN's 2030 Agenda and highlighted the role of nuclear energy, new technologies and artificial intelligence in achieving sustainable development goals. He also met UN Secretary-General António Guterres to discuss Slovakia's Security Council bid, ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, and reforms to strengthen the United Nations.
