General Prosecutor Warns of Weaker Fight Against Tax Fraud

Prosecutor General Maroš Žilinka says Slovakia's response to tax fraud continued to weaken in the first half of 2026. According to prosecution statistics, only 12 people were charged and 10 indicted for tax fraud during the first six months of the year. Žilinka linked the decline to changes in the Criminal Code that raised the minimum threshold for tax fraud offences from 2,660 euros to 20,000 euros. He reiterated his call for legislative changes to strengthen the fight against tax crime, saying he had already submitted proposals to parliament earlier this year.
