The leaders of the Visegrád Group are meeting in Hungary today in a bid to revive closer cooperation between the four Central European countries. Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar says the summit in Gödöllő marks a fresh start for the V4, bringing together the prime ministers of Hungary, Poland, the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
Magyar says the group aims to strengthen Central Europe’s voice within the EU and restore the influence it once enjoyed. The move follows a recent coordination meeting of V4 leaders on the sidelines of last week’s European Council summit in Brussels — their first such gathering in several years.
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico (SMER-SD) says there is strong interest in revitalising the format. Regular V4 coordination largely stalled around three years ago over disagreements on Russia’s war in Ukraine.
