According to law, only companies engaged in high-risk activities such as mining, forestry and steel production are being checked for their safety measures at the moment.
Until 2011 all firms were supposed to undergo inspections, but Parliament changed this in 2011. However, The Private Doctors Association warns it was a mistake and Slovakia should go back to the old system.
“If it doesn't, it could receive a fine of almost €18 million from the European Union,” said association representative Samuel Lvoncik. “The European Commission hasn't yet initiated any action against Slovakia concerning violations of the [EU] rules. It's currently checking to see whether Slovakia is meeting its obligations in line with European regulations on protecting health and safety in the workplace,” said European Commission in Slovakia spokesperson Ingrid Ludviková. The whole case was looked at by the Pravda daily.
