The European Union must deliver tangible results for its inhabitants and strengthen their trust in the common European project, President Peter Pellegrini declared after his meeting with European Parliament President Roberta Metsola on Friday. The talks focused on European security and defence. Pellegrini stressed that Europe must assume greater responsibility for its own security and bolster its defence capabilities in cooperation with NATO.
The President of the European Parliament came in response to an invitation she had received back in November. She emphasized that Europe is a superpower, but it must change in order to fully realize its potential. “And a constant reminder of what is possible in our continent. This is the Europe that we strive for, that we want to be norm for: innovation, industry and ingenuity. Europe succeeds when it turns the attention into the delivery when we will make people’s lives fairer, safer and easier,” said Metsola in Bratislava.
Pellegrini also praised the role of the European Parliament as the Union's only directly elected institution, and he underscored the importance of an open dialogue between European and national leaders.
